IN A GRANITE EMBRACE
BY ANTONIE DEN RIDDER

It is far more difficult to write about an artist who seeks clarity than about one who seeks his subject in the complexities of the world, and life. To touch the image, the language must be just as transparent as the visual reality to which it refers. When an artist speaks of multiple layers, inner conflict or, better yet, about the language itself, then the flow of words from the art observer is unstoppable. But speak of simplicity, tranquility and silence, as Ton Kalle does, then the flood of language stumbles. The silence then becomes deafening when Kalle reveals that 'the language of granite' is his preferred form of expression. The sculptor now lets only the space speak to us, with a muffled ring with which an ill-fated stroke from a lump hammer announces an ominous vein, a weak spot in the stone - writing rhythmically between the furrows from the chisel. The artist's choice of 'words' can only be interpreted as an attempt to keep language at bay, in order to create the opportunity to focus on a different arsenal of possibilities for communication between people. Here, he refers to an armory of phenomena to which meanings are bound, and which he sees as a totality. In contrast to the language in which we speak and think, in the language of granite, meaning cannot simply be coupled to form. It is at least as complex as other languages and comprises a veritable Kama Sutra of endearments. The 1001 distinctive forms to please the eye, and in a multiplicity thereof, the numbers of variations familiar to the tender play of light and shadow. Not to speak of the infinite ways that the sculpture offers itself to the whims of the elements. But equally, it comprises the characteristic handwriting of the chisel and the brute force with which the stone succumbs to its lines of fracture. For Ton Kalle, the language of this stone falls over human reality like a template, a map where the scars form the hieroglyphs, where history delineates the tale of human existence, in which clouds and trees are reflected in the polished planes of stone. If there is a single characteristic that unites all of Ton Kalle's sculptures into a single body of work, it has to be the quiet self-assurance with which they claim their place in the landscape. Here, the sculpture is no stranger in the order of things, and the work of the sculptor need not seek out the sterile security of the white walls of a museum. These sculptures are an open gesture of invitation to their surrounding reality. They possess this quality exclusively because their maker has not focused just on the image itself, but like a generous host, he invites the environment to take part in the game. In the same way that Ton Kalle selects his stones on the basis of their visual potential, already lying there, enclosed in their rough form, he also looks at landscape. In the dent in a boulder, he has already seen the possibilities of the play of light and shadow, long before the sun has shone on it. This vision into the future provides him with the kind of determination and conviction of purpose that we recognize as 'simplicity'. As such, the lines of sight in Park ter Beuken, in Flanders, are a determining element in the final arrangement, with sunlight, rain, the bleached light of the moon, all greeted as welcome guests. In their capacity as participants, they become part of the sculpture, providing it its most enviable, salutary legitimacy. You do not ask a Ton Kalle sculpture if it is all right for it to be there in the park. It simply stands there, five tons of granite, immovable, indomitable. The sun approves. The wind and the stars agree, so who would complain? It is a truly enviable position, one that Ton Kalle achieves because he takes all the countless natural idiosyncrasies into account. It begins because he strives, from the first moment when it is all just a pile of rocks, to see it as a whole. He also says that he could stop anywhere along the working process without that cowardly sense of a sculpture that is not finished. As a whole, a single thing, the sculpture-to-be steams forward until the moment when the sculptor interferes, paradoxically enough, by doing nothing more. In Ton Kalle's case, this is not the moment when every corner or angle is tensely, fretfully drawn to a precise razor edge, but the moment the form is clear, when every further show of virtuosity threatens to become just a distracting manoeuvre. You must have mastery of the craft to make the desired sculpture possible, he says, but it must not get in your way. He lets his great stones lean against one another, stacks them into towers, hangs rock shapes in trees, like moons, lets them dance in Egyptian deserts like fata morganas. In KOREAN SUNRISE, the sun lies like a stone on the horizon, a horizon of which Kalle inquires in his robust, upturned sculpture, WHERE IS THE HORIZON?. In GUARDIAN ANGEL, whose title is thanks to the cosy embrace of a rough star shape made of three large boulders, the starlight sees itself mirrored in the star formed by the water on the polished surface. Simplicity itself cannot escape ambiguity, multiplicity of meanings. Let the restfulness of the sculpture become ours, until we become so still in our simplicity that we too become granite. This is what Ton Kalle intends. Reality is, of course, stubborn and wilful. We remain flesh and blood. The ambivalence of our existence yanks us back again and again, out of the granite embrace. But after an encounter with the sculptures of Ton Kalle, it is with a certain sense of regret.
